Super thrilled with how this installation in Plattekloof turned out! We used used all the existing stones and boulders on site to gently terrace the slope and frame the path. Timber pole steps and a mostly indigenous plant pallette of hardy shrubs turns this previously unused front garden into a hub of activity, with the clients’ two young boys already building forts and searching for geckos.

Planting regionally appropriate, indigenous species, and a variety of them at that for increased biodiversity, has always been important to us. Conversely, reusing existing materials on site, bringing in and carting away as little as possible is going to be increasingly important in the gardens of tomorrow. This is a great example of forgoing building expensive retaining walls but working with the site to create something that will be more rewarding for the residents as well as creatures inhabiting the garden than merely a flat lawn.
