Kommandant
Structured Garden
Welgelegen, Northern Suburbs
Kommandant is a structured residential garden in Welgelegen, shaped around a series of raised planters built along the boundary of the property. The planters were constructed at varying levels to introduce height, depth, and visual interest, creating a more layered garden edge around the lawn.
The planter walls were clad in a neutral-toned stone, giving the garden a calm architectural framework while allowing the planting to soften the structure over time. Pride of India trees were introduced as flowering feature trees, alongside an indigenous Assegaai tree for evergreen presence and local character.
Climbers were planted to soften and screen the boundary walls, while a layered planting palette brings texture, colour, and seasonal change to the raised beds. The result is a garden that balances built structure with softness — creating a more composed, sheltered, and generous outdoor space.
